The planning committee for this year's International Women's Day Seattle is soliciting nominees for the, "AKI KUROSE PEACE & JUSTICE AWARD." Deadline for nominations, FEB 18, 2006!
A k i ‘s S t o r y
Aki Kurose was many things: Nisei (2nd generation Japanese American) woman, internment camp survivor, peace activist, researcher, volunteer, mother, grandmother, friend, teacher, and mentor. Perhaps most importantly she was, and continues to be, an inspiration for women activists of all ages. She inspired activism and had a way of believing in someone and their capacity to make change--far more than the individual may have felt possible within herself. (read more here)
Two awards will be given. The first will be given to a young woman, under thirty, who has already begun working towards peace and justice demonstrating her desire to create change. The second will be awarded to an older woman who has accumulated much experience and wisdom during her many years of committed and enduring effort as an activist for peace and justice.
These awards are to honor the unsung "she-roes" of our community.
