Members of the IWD planning committee met recently and decided, with great reluctance, to discontinue planning for IWD-2006. We will be taking sometime to reflect and reassess what IWD means (or could mean) to the women's community in the Seattle area. Questions about relevance, structure, financial sustainability, inclusiveness, and what "international" means were all on the table. We have no answers at this time. What we have heard is that many women do not want to invest precious time in "only an event."

The alternative appeared to be an unsatisfactory event that would drain limited resources, both of time and money. Those who were contacts with the Seattle Center for the customary venue at the Center House, will cancel the contract. If other women feel this is a mistake, they are of course free to take on the responsibility of planning an IWD-2006 event. We would help with such an effort.

We have every intention for IWD '07 to be stronger and to have positive energy. We look forward to a turning point in the way things have been done on the planning committee, so please bear with us. With your input, these changes will happen.

We will be contacting everyone we know who has been involved in past IWD events or who has indicated an interest in participating in its planning. We want to make sure that everyone knows of the change in plans. We also want to plan monthly meetings (time and place to be determined) to address questions about IWD's future.

We hope you will join us and bring all the dynamic women you know. If you can't attend meetings, your ideas are welcome.
